So, you know the way things go - plans change, ideas get abandoned...and new plans take over!
I've been looking at car-derived vans for a while, but they seemed never to come up for decent enough money, unless they've been beaten to shit and beyond as a builder's hack!
They've become fairly popular as customisable little wagons of late, and have that extra element of usefulness by being able to carry a shitload of your stuff in the back!
I spotted this less-than-beautiful little beauty on our local VAG forum, and knew Paudie, the seller, to be a stand-up decent guy...a few text messages were exchanged, photos were viewed, and I made him an offer he couldn't refuse!
Danny, good mate, general all-round good guy and fellow committee member of VAGE (our little club here in Ireland - check us out on www.vage.ie) was on the lookout for a diesel runabout, so we struck a deal on Patsy the Passat, and he then drove me onwards west to pick up this little SEAT Inca van.
Yes, she's a little worse-for-wear, and showing signs of having had a tough time....but as they used to say at the start of 'The Six Million Dollar Man'...''we can rebuild her......''.
Watch this space, as this one gonna be a lot of fun! Tear out, refit, lowered, old school classic rims, and a redneck paint job done on the driveway...man, the neighbours are gonna be pissed!
A blog on my old stash of water-cooled VW's going through restoration or modification..

Some corrado updates
The ever popular...or unpopular... joey modded headlights, or how to spruce up your lamps while still being a cheap bastard who can't afford new smoked ones!
Step one - remove lights from car...
Step two - clean all the tiger seal off the lamps that some previous knuckle-dragging mouth-breathing owner used....to fit his grille spoiler!
Step 3 - remove lamp lenses...CAREFULLY! If you're a ham-fisted Neanderthal, best let someone with a bit of finesse do this for you...hammer NOT required for this task! Prise lens clips away from glass with a flat screwdriver, levering against the back of the lamp, not the lens!
Step four - clean up lens with wire wool to remove two decades of gunk, then polish with glass cleaner of your choice...DON'T DROP THE FUCKIN' THING!
Step five - Get your trusty tin of smooth hammerite and a fine artists brush, and brace yourself...here comes the tricky bit.....steady now!
Step five-and-a-half...to steady your nerves, have a refreshing cool beverage...here's mine being delivered to the workbench...thanks darlin'!
Step six - lay the paint on evenly, taking your time around the edges of the reflector bowls...here's how it should end up...

Step seven - repeat for the other lamp...
Step eight - re-assemble the lamps once the paint has dried and pat yourself on the back, job well done.
I don't have a pic of them on the car yet, as its still in eleventy million pieces on the driveway.....patience, all will be done soon!
Later folks,

Fuck performance! Gimme economy anyday...!
So, with the Hench gone, twas time to find a cheap 'n' cheerful daily plodder to get me around while the rest of the projects are being worked on...
A quick call to Geo uncovered a 1995 Passat TDi 90bhp sitting in his yard, looking for a new home and some tlc.
50mpg and 2 years test sealed the deal, along with a criminally low price...'Patsy the Passat' was on her way home to us!
Check out the horrible SEAT wheel trims on 14'' steels, and the ride height high enough to give you altitude sickness!
But, on the plus side, a dry engine, cheap and cheerful super-dee-duper Aldi MP3 head-unit and Mk3 Golf GTi bucket front seats...not bad for the price of a months petrol in the Hench, eh?
I swore I wasn't gonna do any thing to her, just fuel and drive...but then there'd be no fun it that, now would there?
Some wheels, a B3 passat duckbill spoiler, one hell of a clean, detail and paint correction and a serious shlap of the lowering shtick should make her a fun runaround and general load-lugger!!
Plans are underway for her transformation, so keep checking in for updates soon.

Mel's Corrado G60
So, while I'm fuckin' around with old diesel plodders, my better half decides she wants a slice of the action!
And what better way to do it than with a supercharger fitted!
'Jessie the G60' is one of current projects...
The day we found her...
Yes, she looked a little sorry for herself, but with only 67k miles on the clock, and a healthy charger, we couldn't really leave her sitting in the shed where we found her...
paintwork definitely showing its age, but mechanically she's 100%, so this should be a light restoration with only a bit of tidying and a shitload of elbow grease needed! There's plenty of progress going on, so watch out for plenty of updates coming soon...
Take it easy,
RV.

Mk1's on the move....
As my old lock-up is no longer available, it was time to bring the two Mk1 projects home...
On the road....
And safely tucked up for the night...
Have a couple of nice plans for these...all will be revealed soon...

Gone but not forgotten....'The Hench'......
Well, what can I say about this car? It's by far the best car I've ever owned.......a 1994 Audi Ur-S6 Avant....
She was meticulously maintained by Alan from Autowerks-Cork, the Irish VW/Audi/Mercedes tuning and restoration specialists.........he was the previous owner who I had to hound for 6 months to persuade him to sell her to me!
Rechipped to ~300bhp, quattro 4wd system, stupidly fast, very comfortable, big enough to fit a single bed in the back (for furniture moving reasons....not what you're all thinking! HA!), and still good for 160mph, BOSE 10 speaker ICE system, 0-60 in sub 6secs (not bad for a car weighing in at 1800kgs!), stuck to the road like shit to a blanket.......but sweet Lord Jesus she was an absolute alcoholic on juice!
Many a jap car fan scurried away with their tails between their legs after meeting me on the road.......nuff said!
Now sold back to Autowerks, as I've got too many projects on the go at the minute......and petrol ain't getting any cheaper! Ah well, she and I had our fun together......
Why called 'The Hench'? Cos she looked like the kinda wagon a shitload of evil henchmen would arrive in, that's why!

Gone but not forgotten......The Mk2's...........
So here's some of the second generation Golfs and Jettas that have passed through my hands over the years......they're listed in no particular order.....
First up is Christine, named because she continued to drive for miles while the engine was on fire, as I raced towards my pal Joe's workshop and his lovely bank of fire extinguishers! HAHA! This is the car that got me well and truly hooked on Mk2's, which are still my favourite veedub....3 engines, 2 gearboxes, and just about every nut and bolt was replaced on this car in the 10 years I owned her......I found her rotting away under a tree in a back garden in England....rebuilt, resprayed, and generally brought back to life....once the parts receipts topped €10,000, I stopped keeping them! Every day for 8 years I drove her....and she put a smile on my face every time. She never let me down once in all that time......some might say it was down to mechanical skill on my part.....I call it luck!
My first Mk2 Jetta, nicknamed 'Asal', which is native Irish for donkey! Slow, steady, would go forever on a sip of diesel.......bought as a cheap runaround while I was rebuilding Christine......I still ended up throwing a couple of grand into her on G60 steels, shocks, brake overhaul, wheel bearings, fluids, filters and belts. I regretted selling her within days of letting her go to her new owner, who still uses her regularly.....that's part of the satisfaction for me...rejuvenating cars and seeing them get a new lease of life.......
Next up....my next Mk2 Golf Gti......found in a field about 15miles from home, bought for a song and again did my usual of throwing a shitload of money into her! Will I ever fucking learn????? Ehhhhhhh, no, probably not....that's the beauty of these cars, they're a constantly evolving hobby........easy to work on, easy to source parts (a trade discount helps too) and uber-reliable when you do things right.....
So anyway, this is Carrie.....named after we discovered the evil within......within the engine to be precise.............................worn thrust washers meant the crankshaft danced around like Fred Astaire on ecstasy when you gave her a shot of revs.......engine rebuild time! Oh Shit! More big bills!
It was around this time a few years back that my health took a kamikaze nosedive for a while, so a fellow VW/Audi nut and all round good guy called Geo did a full engine rebuild for me......when my health improved, I made the 80 mile journey to his garage and drove her home....man that trip home was sweet....she ran better than when she left the factory.......credit where its due...this man knows his shit when it comes to old VW's......and he's always on the end of the phone ready to help when I invariably fuck something up! Thanks George!
Sadly, she's now also gone to a new home up north of our little country, where she's getting the pampering she deserves....
How I found her....
...and how she ended up with some mechanical work and a lot of tlc....
So what do you do when you've sold your 100+bhp Mk2 GTi? How do you replace the sharp handling, solidly built, finely tuned and fettled hot-hatch?
You buy another 55bhp diesel plodder, that's what!
My most recent road-going Mk2....another Jetta diesel.......the original owner (from new) asked me did I know anyone who'd take her, as she didn't want her to go to the crusher........I said of course I'll give her a new home.....
So off we went again, replacing parts, fluids, belts, brakes...does it ever end? No, actually....it doesn't! Why do us VW nuts do it.........dunno....we just DO....and we love every fuckin' minute! My good mate Alan did Trojan work on the bodywork, spending two full nights cutting back the original paint a few layers.........the transformation is unbelievable....just look at the pics below.......he did such a fantastic job, I was asked on numerous occasion s had she been repainted! When it comes to detailing and cleaning cars, this man knows his shit! Nuff said!
I did a bit of shed parts-bin raiding on this one to give her a bit of an individual look....and I don't think she turned out too bad......interestingly, when I advertised her for sale, after a couple of hours I had to turn off my phone because I was getting so many text messages and phone calls! Loretta De Jetta has been given a new lease of life and is now gone to her new home in the West of Ireland, that windswept, rainy region beloved of poets, scholars, and rain-gear-wearing tourists, eager to trace their roots and drink overpriced beer while wearing itchy wool jumpers!
here's how she looked the day me and Mel picked her up......looking a little tired, forlorn, and cowshit stained from 20yrs in the countryside...
How she ended up after we worked a little magic on her....fitted first with Porsche Teledials which got a €50 home refurb...
...and then some hand polished Porsche Design 90's which we swapped the 'dials for with a friend....
So now....that's just some of the Mk2's that have passed through my driveway......most never made it to the road and became parts donors, some just dropped by for a visit........like the mint one-owner-from-new small bumper early Mk2 in brown, with matching brown tweed interior that I loaned to a pal and never got back.....
.....or the GTD that melted a piston while being driven around Ireland by two sour-faced French lesbians on holidays, so I offered 'em 100 quid for it.......funny story, that one actually.........remind me to tell you some other time.....
OK, that's all for now....
